If this is the first time you have had heard the expression ‘biohacking’ then this should give you a quick overview of everything you need to know. Firstly, let me take the time to welcome you to the first step of what is likely to be an enlightening, fulfilling and sometimes bizarre journey! Many simple ‘biohacks’ come at no cost to yourself and may be implemented instantly, others may require parting with your hard earned cash and seem completely geeky at first. You can simply pick and choose what you would like to adopt or tweak so it best fits in with your own lifestyle, goals and personality. The great thing with biohacking is the ability to choose your own level of commitment.
So, let’s begin with trying to define biohacking. Biohacking is simply the desire to be the absolute best version of ourselves. In a bit more detail, biohacking can mean altering or optimising your own human biology, in order to achieve a certain set of desired results. At Pando we want to educate you and help you to get those results.
The team over at the Biohacker’s Handbook have made this awesome biohacking graphic. It gives you a high level overview of the areas you might want to work on and Pando will help deep dive into each.
If we want better outputs—to have more energy and focus, to be free of disease, to have a better memory, to perform optimally in business and sport—then let’s tweak the things we put into our body and mind to make that a reality.
Biohacking is about getting your hands dirty and learning from experience.
Pando will be covering everything mentioned below in great depth to give you more of the ‘why you should do it’ and not just the ‘what you should do’.
Where to start?
First, you may want to take a look at your nutrition and move over to an eating plan that addresses inflammation in the body, gets your blood sugar under control and one that keeps you feeling energised all day long (hint: Paleo is a good starting block, although you might want to make your own adaptations).
Next, you may want to address your sleep. Sleep is when our bodies recover and prepare for the day ahead. Many neglect this, despite it being one of the most important aspects of your health to hack in order to get a fully rejuvenated body and mind. Techniques can range from correct nutritional timing from your food intake, simply avoiding screens for the two hours prior to bed or even investing in a pair of blue-light blocking sunglasses.
Once, you have the basics dialled in with your sleep and diet you can begin to delve deeper and really start thinking outside of the box. To improve your cognitive functioning you may look to exercise your mind with N-dual back training or on websites such as Luminosity. You can begin experimenting with supplementation and nootropics (the next best thing to the pill from the movie Limitless) or you could try a daily routine of mindful meditation. The possibilities are endless and can really end up quite creative!
Welcome to the world of biohacking!
Hopefully, this provides you with a little introduction into biohacking, enough to make you start thinking about what it is that YOU want to improve in Your Life. For me, the key was starting to practice self-awareness of my body. Before, I would never think about trying to improve my sleep quality, let alone that you actually could. I’ve moved from a world of complaints, often complaining this hurts or generally feeling lousy, to one of challenges, often asking myself how I can really take my daily functioning to a whole new level. You can improve every single aspect of your life: relationships, your ability to learn, your ability to move, anything! You may prefer to tangibly track your own self-quantification and the team at Quantified Self provide a list of loads of apps you can get started with.
Over time we will keep bringing articles to you that challenge your daily norms and hopefully start to promote positive changes in your lives. Be prepared to start feeling more energised, smarter, sexier, charismatic and confident. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to know more about how you can start improving today.
